"Slab" covers a lot of ground: the pad under a backyard shed, the floor of a metal shop building, an RV parking area, a generator base, the working surface of a small warehouse. What they share is that the concrete is only half the job — the base underneath and the reinforcement inside decide whether the slab is still flat in ten years.

What goes under a slab

  • Compacted structural base. Placed in lifts. On fill lots common in Spanish Springs and the South Reno hills, this is the single most important step.
  • Vapor barrier. Under any conditioned or finished space to keep moisture from migrating up into flooring.
  • Reinforcement on chairs. Rebar that ends up lying on the ground does nothing; it has to sit inside the slab.
  • Isolation and control joints. Isolation where the slab meets walls or columns, control joints cut early on a spacing tied to thickness.

Reno-specific slab considerations

  • Freeze-thaw. Exterior slabs use air-entrained mixes and get cure protection through cold snaps.
  • Rapid drying. Low humidity plus wind pulls water out of the surface fast. Evaporation retarders and prompt curing prevent crazing and dusting.
  • Soil variation. Valley floor sediments, decomposed granite on the west side, and engineered fill in newer subdivisions all behave differently under load.
  • Frost depth. Slabs supporting structures need footings below frost; a floating pad is fine for a shed but not for a heated addition. See footings.
  • Drainage. Pads set flush to grade collect water. A slight crown or slope keeps snowmelt off the surface.

Common slab problems and fixes

  • Random cracking — usually joints spaced too far apart or cut too late. Stable cracks can be routed and sealed; see concrete crack repair.
  • Curling at edges — a moisture-gradient issue from fast drying. Grinding can relieve trip hazards.
  • Dusting or soft surface — surface water added during finishing, or a slab that dried before it cured. Resurfacing restores a wear layer.
  • Settlement — base failure. This is where replacement usually beats patching, since the underlying cause has to be corrected.
  • Spalling — freeze-thaw damage in a non-air-entrained mix or de-icer exposure. Covered under concrete repair.

What a slab estimate depends on

  • Dimensions, thickness and total yardage
  • Reinforcement schedule and whether anchors or embeds are needed
  • Excavation depth, rock in the subgrade, and imported base material
  • Vapor barrier, insulation or under-slab conduit and plumbing
  • Access for trucks versus needing a pump or buggies
  • Finish: broom for exterior pads, hard trowel for interior floors, polish for showpiece shop floors

How thick should a shed or shop slab be?

Four inches over a compacted base handles a typical backyard shed or light workshop. Five to six inches with a rebar grid is the move if vehicles, a lift, or heavy equipment will be on it.

Do I need a vapor barrier under my slab?

Yes for any space that will be conditioned or finished with flooring. It stops ground moisture from moving up through the slab. Detached, unheated storage pads are less critical but still benefit from one.

How far apart should control joints be?

A common rule of thumb is 24 to 36 times the slab thickness in inches, so a four-inch slab gets joints every eight to twelve feet. Panels are kept close to square rather than long and narrow.

Can a slab be poured on frozen ground?

No. Frozen subgrade thaws and settles under the new slab. Winter work involves thawing and protecting the ground first, or waiting for a workable window.
